Relaxation, enough sleep, and a feeling of wellbeing are so crucial throughout pregnancy. Research has found that being in a relaxed frame of mind during pregnancy benefits not only the mother, but also the unborn child. Having regular reflexology sessions can really help with this, especially when combined with appropriate essential oils (I have also studied aromatherapy in pregnancy and am able to advise essential oils to help with an array of unwanted pregnancy symptoms, as well as ones to have with you at the birth).
Reflexology in pregnancy can be a wonderful time to rest and take time for yourself. To connect with your baby as you stop and unwind. It’s good to get the feet worked on from a circulation point as well, they are working so hard right now carrying the extra weight – and there are techniques which can aid lymph drainage, as well as other minor symptoms of pregnancy.
There has been a lot of research into the benefits of reflexology in pregnancy, especially in Denmark where reflexology is the most commonly used complementary therapy and is offered in most maternity clinics.
There have even been studies that show reflexology can significantly reduce pain during labour and reduce the length of the first stage of labour;
A study that showed reflexology improved the quality of sleep in post-natal women:
A study that showed reflexology can shorten the second stage of labour for women with low back pain or pelvic girdle pain (who received 6 weekly reflexology sessions);
A study to show that reflexology reduced pain and stress levels for women with low back pain or pelvic girdle pain (who received 6 weekly reflexology sessions);
A study to show how reflexology can lower anxiety scores of women in labour
The twelve weeks after the birth are sometimes referred to as the ‘fourth trimester.’ This is a very important time for the Mother. Her body has spent nine months giving everything to her unborn child, and then undergone the equivalent of running a marathon during the birth. But the focus is so much on the baby at this time that the Mother often overlooks her own needs. However, I try to suggest to my post-partum clients that it is much easier to give from a full cup that is overflowing, than an empty one. If local to me I can offer home visits at this time if easier because I value the importance of getting some treatments in during these 12 weeks so dearly. Reflexology can help immensely to rebalance from all the changes that have occurred, by aiding the body’s own innate ability for regaining its natural state.
Gift vouchers for Reflexology make a wonderful gift at this time, and I urge anyone to think of these rather than flowers! Often a mother will come if she has been gifted it more so than thinking of it for herself.
