Hot & Cold Stone Reflexology in Hereford

What is Hot & Cold Stone Reflexology?

This is reflexology (massage of pressure points of the feet), but with the addition of the feet being massaged with hot smooth stones as well as with my hands. The duration of the treatment session is the same, but the effect can be more powerful. It is said that one stroke of a hot stone can be as effective as five massage strokes with just the hands. This is because the warmth penetrates deeper into the tissue, meaning the effects last longer on the body.

The primary use of hot stone massage/ thermotherapy is to help relieve pains and tension associated with muscle stiffness and cramping. In a reflexology treatment, as we are working remotely on organs and structures of the body, via the reflex points of the feet, the effect can be profound on the whole body and our overall well-being.

Often only hot stones are used in a treatment, although sometimes I will use a cold stone if there are areas that feel particularly congested. However, cold stones are not for everyone, and this will be assessed during the consultation beforehand.

Benefits of Hot & Cold Reflexology

  • The combination of hot and cold stones promotes deep relaxation
  • Penetrates deeper into the tissue and has a five times longer lasting effect upon the body
  • Hot stones have been shown to lower cortisol levels and help to support the parasympathetic nervous system to help the body reverse the ‘fight or flight’ stress reaction
  • Hot stones are grounding and calming
  • Heated basalt releases negative ions, which promotes enhanced well-being and may help to neutralise harmful positive ions in the atmosphere
  • The warmth can aid the essential oils (if used) to be absorbed into the skin
  • And of course – the most important thing – it feels wonderfully soothing and relaxing!

What type of stone is used?

Hot stone reflexology and massage uses basalt stones for the heat application. These are the beautiful result of volcanic eruptions. It is molten lava that has solidified under intense heat and pressure. Basalt stones are typically rounded and smoothed by the motions of the water that they are found in. The ocean or rivers tumble them enough to be able to use in their natural state. The basalt stones that I use come from a volcanic river bed in Peru. They are purchased fairly using local trade laws.

Basalt is chosen for hot stone therapy because it retains heat well and is non-explosive (will not crack in heat). Since basalt is formed from molten lava and molten lava is rock that was heated so much it became liquid, there is a lot of strength, fire and power contained within basalt. Some say it has healing properties of its own.

Marble is used for the cold application. This cannot be used in its natural state, it needs to be shaped and polished so that it can be used on bare skin. The marble I use comes from the Hebei province of China (known for the Great Wall of China!). Marble is often used by stone therapists for grounding and calming, and it is said to enhance the power of serenity.
