Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) in Hereford & Tenbury Wells

What is Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)?

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is a specialist reflexology technique developed by Sally Kay while working in cancer care. It uses a specific sequence of movements on the feet, focusing on areas known in reflexology as the lymphatic reflexes.

The technique was originally developed to explore support for people with secondary lymphoedema following breast cancer treatment. Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid when the lymphatic system is unable to drain it effectively. This can happen following treatment that removes or damages lymph nodes.

RLD is carried out on the feet, so there is no need to massage or uncover the swollen area. It offers a soothing treatment and time to pause, unwind and relax.

Who Might Benefit from RLD?

Living with lymphoedema can affect both physical comfort and emotional well-being. Early research into RLD has recorded reductions in arm swelling and improvements in participants' reported well-being. Although originally developed for arm lymphoedema following breast cancer treatment, RLD is also used with people experiencing lymphoedema in other areas of the body, including the legs.

Sally Kay's approach also explores using RLD to support wellbeing in people living with other conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Asthma and eczema
  • Chronic fatigue and M.E.
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sinus problems
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Muscular tension, aches and pains
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

You don't need to have lymphoedema or a particular health condition to enjoy RLD. It can also be a wonderfully soothing treatment for general wellbeing, offering time to unwind and reconnect with your body.

The experience can bring a sense of lightness and ease, leaving you feeling deeply relaxed and refreshed. Alongside this, reflexology may encourage more restful sleep, lift your mood and help you feel more like yourself again.

How Many Sessions will I Need?

Each person's needs and response to treatment are different. Where possible, I suggest starting with four weekly appointments, then reviewing how you feel and whether further sessions would be helpful.

Some people choose to continue weekly for a little longer, while others move to less frequent appointments. We can agree the next steps together, based on your experience and what you would like from your treatments.

Appointments are available in 45-minute or 60-minute sessions, with time to discuss how you have been feeling and tailor your treatment to you.
